Giving Notice

This is only applicable if you are getting legally married  

I will prompt you by email when I have posted your Marriage Notice Application Forms (GRO446) – in the envelope will be one for each of you and signed by me in advance, these should be submitted to the Registration Office located in the district where your ceremony will take place (The one local to your venue). You then can send the completed forms to the Registrar.

 

The forms can be submitted within a year before the date of your marriage and must be with the Registrar no later than 28 days before the wedding (please do not wait until this deadline, this can cause some hassle with collecting on the day of your wedding), they prefer them around 12 weeks before. 

The forms must be supported with the following;

  1. A fee of £44 (£22 each for your notice to marry) - they will ring you and ask for you to pay this over the phone if you are posting/emailing them.

  2. Both of your (long) birth certificates

  3. Both of your passports 

Sometimes they will also take £8 for your marriage certificate at this time too.

Previously married persons will also be asked to provide either;

  1. Divorce Papers (Decree Absolute), or

  2. Death Certificate of spouse

The forms and can be emailed, posted or handed in, whichever is applicable to the Registry Office you are contacting, you need to check in with them before hand.

Step 01

On receiving your forms

Fill them in with the required information. Keep an eye on your dates, it is really important that this is submitted on time. 

Check out what is applicable to you in the guidance notes attached with your forms. For instance if you are from outside of NI, UK or Ireland, there may be additional forms for you to do. Depending on your circumstance, you also may need to provide additional documentation for eg. Divorce papers etc. Check in with me if you need assistance but usually the best thing to do is to ring the Registry Office if you are unsure.​

Step 03

Marriage Schedule Collection

When you submit your notice to the Registry Office, they will tell you that you need to collect your marriage schedule in the 14 days prior to your wedding. This is something that one of you have to do in person. Do also remember to take all your original documents (passports, birth certs and Notice forms) with you when you're collecting this in particular if you submitted your notice via post or email.

The Marriage Schedule MUST come with you on your wedding day. We need this document to sign on the day to make everything we are doing legal.

Step 02

Submit them to the Registrar's Office

If you are unsure which Registry Office you should be submitting them to, check the list below for your venue and you will see the district in which it belongs to. Then you need to check with that Registry Office how they are receiving them. For instance, some accept them via email, others post and some require for them to be handed to them in person. If you are outside of the Country, do alert them to this to make arrangements that work for you. Some offices only operate on an appointment basis so do bear this in mind also when planning to submit them. If you are posting or emailing them, they will ring you to take payment over the phone. Never send original documents in the post.

Step 04

Return your marriage schedule

Within 3 working days after you wedding, the signed marriage schedule needs to be returned back to the registry office for them to print out your marriage certificate. This does not need to be either of you if you're heading off on a lovely honeymoon or other, this can be anyone. Some of them ask that you just return them to a small post box outside their office and they will then post you out your marriage certificate and others will make an appointment for you and will print out the certificate then and there.
